Addiction as Disease? - More Boardroom Fantasies from Big Pharma

http://addictionsandrecovery.org/is-addiction-a-disease.htm

Categorising recurrent emotional and behavioural responses that deviate from social norms as being 'diseased' is simply a money making racket dreamt up in the boardrooms of pharmaceutical companies. It is Pharmaceutica. Inc. that sponsors the research into the whole neurotransmitter complex of reactions and who ultimately get to choose how the resultant data should be interpreted. It is a commonplace truism to assert that the brain is a staggeringly complex organ and as yet drugs which attempt to target specific dopamine re-uptake pathways and the like have proven to be nothing more than blanket bombs that only succeed in drowning out the entire central nervous system - the 'addiction' is cured at the expense of every other impulse which makes life itself worthy of the name.

In fact, most medical professionals are uniquely unqualified to dispense advice and information regarding any aspect of the lives of people with 'addiction' issues outside of their competence of how this behaviour impacts on their physical condition. This is the only important role a medical professional can or should play in the lives of anyone with emotional/behavioural or 'addiction' issues - as the whole matter can only be resolved ultimately by the individuals themselves when they consider what role the 'addiction' plays in the context of their whole lives. The medical fraternity is amply rewarded by subscribing to this false and scientifically unsound neurological reductionism which seeks to compound the entire gamut of human complexity into a readily marketable solution - like latter-day Pavlovians imagining humans to be simply wound up automata in need of a simple gear switch or motor lubricant to set them on the 'right path'.

Generally speaking those elements of the medical profession who most fervently defend the dogma of neurobiological reductionism are the most imaginatively constrained and emotionally stunted ghouls you could ever encounter - completely at odds with the often vibrant and larger than life personalities whom our structurally sick society has nevertheless delivered into their care as part of a marketing strategy for pharmaceutical executives. This is all about expanding the jurisdictional competence of an otherwise noble profession and prostituting it's worse elements as glorified salesmen peddling pharmaceutica's poorly understood psycho-stimulants.

People talk of drug addiction and drug addicts - it's almost laughable when you consider how much government coffers are prepared to dole out to pharmaceutical companies as part of medical schemes to cure afflictions that have been dreamt up in their boardrooms. A Brave New World indeed where whole nations are coerced into solving their social problems the simple way, by drugging them out of existence - whereas in non-dsyfunctional traditional societies (unlaced by the corrosive acid of capitalist gain) where communities actually consist of binding face to face relationships the majority of personal and emotional issues which underlie addiction are simply hammered out through direct confrontation - talk, talk and more talk.

Insofar as we've lost the capacity to even do that much only a fundamentally sick society can produce addictive personalities construed as 'mentally diseased' persons.
